Sports Report

We have had an exceptional year in sport at Bishop Bavin. From pupils representing us at the Olympics and other international events, to achieving excellent results both nationally and provincially, our hearts are bursting with pride for our school’s achievements this year!

We have an outstanding team of dedicated professionals in Mrs Lourens, Mrs Ivanova, Mr Van Deventer and Mr Levenson, without whom these achievements would not have been possible. Thank you for all your hard work this past year; it is a pleasure to work with such a dedicated team. There have been a number of exceptional achievements this year. Our biggest news is that we have our first Bishop Bavin Olympian: Shireen Sapiro will be representing South Africa at the Beijing Olympics along with two other Bishop Bavin Seal swimmers, Tadhg Slattery and Lize-Marie Retief. This is a great honour for our school and we will be watching her races on TV with bated breath.

Our swimming goes from strength to strength and we have a number of provincial and national swimmers representing Bishop Bavin. Another superb achievement is that Mpumi Geza has been selected as part of the rowing team which ROWSA is sending to the World Junior Rowing Championships to represent South Africa in Austria. We are so proud of his achievement! We also won the co-ed trophy at SA Champs in Rowing this year as well as taking the Derek Read Best Boys Sculling Trophy at SA Champs – the first time a co-ed school has achieved this.

We also have a number of pupils representing us both provincially and nationally in sports such as tennis, fencing, athletics and soccer.

Team sports also did well this year, with the following noteworthy accomplishments:
Six rugby players have been selected to take part in the Lynx Craven Week. Seven netball players from various age groups made the Private Schools’ trial selections, as well as all of our Prep School teams and our College Under 19 team, which made playoffs – placing us in the top six schools out of forty-two participating private schools.

The college soccer team beat three and drew with one of the schools we played against.
We were extremely sad to lose a long standing member of our Sport Department in Mr Y Dekom, who moved on to a career in banking. We wish him all the best in his new career – he did promise us his undying support for Bishop Bavin (especially the basketball team) !

We would like to thank all who support us in the Sports Department. We are a very important and integral part of the school life and without the support of the pupils, parents, PTSA, David Strange and most especially, Father Ellis, we would not be able to achieve these magnificent results. Thank you to all these people who bless and inspire us, in all that we do!

Mrs D Ellis and Mr D Odendal
Heads of Sport
