Sports Report
We have had another exciting year in sport at Bishop Bavin! From pupils representing us internationally in fencing and swimming to achieving excellent results provincially, we were once again at the top of our game in 2008/2009!
Thank you so much to the Sports department for all your hard work this past year, it is such a pleasure to work with such a dedicated team! Mrs J Lourens, Mrs I Ivanova, Mrs C Page, Mr A Van Deventer and Mr N Levenson, you all give of your time during school, after hours and on weekends, so freely, and without this team, some of our fantastic sporting achievements would not have been possible. A particular welcome must go to Mrs C Page for becoming an official member of our Sports department. She has coached for us for many years and we are so pleased to have you on board officially now!
There have been a number of wonderful achievements in Sport this past 2008/2009 year which must be made mention of:
Our biggest news was, of course, that we have a Olympic GOLD Medalist: Shireen Sapiro represented South Africa at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 along with 2 other Bishop Bavin Seal swimmers: Tadhg Slattery (who achieved a bronze medal!) and Lize-Marie Retief. Shireen won the gold in the 100m Backstroke, tying for the first time ever in an Olympic swimming race with a World record time. Congratulations to both her and her coach Theo Verster who is our resident Bishop Bavin Seals’ coach. Words cannot even begin to express the complete pride we felt as a school at this moment! A contingent of our pupils went to greet the Paralympic team and Shireen and Theo Verster at the airport when they returned, which was broadcast on National television. What a moment in our school’s history!
We celebrated both these achievements and the other national and provincial achievements at a “Night of the Stars” banquet, at the end of the year, where we awarded no less than 52 pupils for their national and provincial achievements in both sport and cultural arenas. This is no small feat for a school of our size!
We also have a number of provincial and national swimmers representing Bishop Bavin as our swimming went from strength to strength in 2009. Shireen has broken 5 World Records, since her achievement in Beijing. The Bishop Bavin Seals had an outstanding season of results. Mention must also be made of Kayla Shortt who was awarded Top Open Water Swimmer this year, for all ages, even though she is a Junior, and she received colours together with Shireen for National representation. Dylan Da Silva and Kayla Shortt won 5 and 6 medals respectively at the CGA Level 2 Championships. Brenden Crawford achieved a gold and a bronze at Level 3 SA Champs and he was the captain for the Gauteng team.
Another fantastic achievement was that Ashleigh Strange and Demi-Lee Schultz were selected to represent South Africa at the World Junior Fencing Championships in Ireland, in April - we are so proud of these achievement girls!
We also won the Co-ed trophy at SA Champs in Rowing again this year.
We also have a number of pupils representing us both provincially and nationally in sports such as tennis, fencing, athletics and soccer and netball.
Our team sports also did well this year, most notably:
Our college boy’s soccer teams have a wonderful season record of winning the all of their matches. Our U 18 netball girls had an impressive record of wins during the season too, as did some of our Prep school netball teams.
We would like to thank all who support us in the Sports Department - we are a very important and integral part of the school’s life and without the support of the pupils, parents, the PTSA, David Strange and most especially Father Ellis, we would not be able to achieve these wonderful results. Thank you to all these people who bless and inspire us, in all that we do!
