Spelling Bee

Bishop Bavin hosts an annual inter-schools’ Spelling Bee – this year being the fourth of its kind and certainly very popular amongst the schools who participate.

All these young contestants must be congratulated on their exceptional spelling skills – something that seems to be a lost art these days!  It is an achievement in itself to be a participant.  It is no mean feat to spell well – let alone stand before an audience, hold your pose and spell aloud without being able to write out the word.  Each contestant receives a certificate of participation to recognize their spelling talent. This year there was also a wonderful first prize of an MP4 player.

We are always astounded at the competence of the second language speakers from Leeuwenhof and Jan Cilliers, who enter every year without fail.  This year our winner was from Assumption Convent.

The Spelling Bee is a most enjoyable evening – an hour of nail-biting suspense and the chance to witness some of very best young brains jostle their way to the ‘sudden death’ end.  J-O-S-T-L-E. And that is my final answer!
