“There are obviously two educations.  One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live.” James Truslow Adams

It has been said that the development of desirable attributes and behaviour - that imperceptible something which we style personality – is the chief work of the school.  It is my belief that this profound statement is at the core of what a good school produces.  It is our aim at Bishop Bavin School – and you will see our personalities celebrated in this annual of their achievements.

It must always be remembered that how human-beings live their lives is determined by the education they have received at school.  The whole world has come to realize that only through good education can every country better itself and we owe it to our children, their future and South Africa.

As South Africans it is of the utmost importance that we are aware that our future will be determined by the education we are giving all our children and as schools and educators it is important that we give our best.  South Africa’s future cannot be anticipated but schools have a vital role to play in that future. (We must always remember when giving our children a good and holistic education in body, mind and soul, it is giving our children an apprenticeship for life.)  We cannot allow the past to impinge on our future, our children must be educated.

Christ has instructed us to love one another as he loves us.  It is in response to this injunction that we at schools must create a foundation for a better and brighter future.

One of the greatest gifts given to our country is the rich tapestry of its people and it is the schools role, I believe, to weave that tapestry into a strong and moral society and a South Africa to be proud of.

To all the men and women who make up the Bishop Bavin family my blessings – you made a difference to all our children.  Their apprenticeship, I believe, is in good hands.

“NITAMUR SEMPER AD OPTIMA.”
“Let us always strive for the best.”
