THE A, B and C’S HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY THE ICT’S

How can we best prepare our students to succeed in the 21st Century?

The growing demand for technology skills across industry, is leading to some concern that there will be too few ICT graduates to meet future business needs. Bishop Bavin through the development of new technologies and help from our  ICT staff  have developed a wonderful platform where youngsters in Prep classrooms are surfing the web for  information, uploading digital photographs and video to YouTube, and playing online games. Their technical know-how and inquisitive minds are sending a wake-up call to many teachers and parents just coming to grips with basic computer skills, let alone the intriguing world of podcasts, webstreams, blogs and wikis.

The focus at Bishop Bavin School is on what our learners need, and then to best match the technology to those needs. Bishop Bavin has developed smart classrooms with wireless access, smart boards and desktops with these initiatives and through a host of other projects we are streamlining Bishop Bavin’s ICT operations so that all students and staff will soon be able to access any information when they want it, no matter where they are on the campus thus achieving the philosophy “Education everywhere and at any time “.

Plans to revamp Bishop Bavin’s intranet site are also under way with the pilot of our Portal system, which will be running in its first stage by the end of the year, this will allow students and staff access to their network files and assessment from external internet access points.

Over the past year we have upgraded the computer centres around the campus with new computers installed and managed windows servers and internet proxy servers, we have developed an amazing Web Page, installed wireless access and upgraded the fibre network points and switches across the campus. I would like to thank Mr Pringle for his wonderful work in managing and constantly looking for new methods to improve the delivery of ICT at Bishop Bavin. I would also like to thank the Board of Governance and the PTSA for all their support.
